If you are a skilled professional, trades person or student graduating from a university in Australia, you may be eligible to apply for a skilled migration visa.

Typically applicants have to lodge an expression of interest and pass a points test. DIBP conduct regular reviews of which skills/trades are in shortage in Australia and adjust the number of intake accordingly.

Skilled Independent Visa

This is a permanent visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by a state/territory, employer or family member.  Visa applicants must meet the points score of 60, relying on their own qualifications and experience to satisfy the visa requirements.  

The visa holder is permitted to live and work anywhere in Australia.

Skilled Nominated Visa

This is a permanent visa for skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory government.  The visa allows applicants to live and work anywhere in the sponsoring state/territory.  Applicants still need to pass a points test but can receive 5 bonus points for having a state/territory sponsor.

Skilled Nominated (provisional) Visa

This is a provisional visa for skilled workers who are nominated by a state/territory government or an eligible relative.  The visa is valid up to four years.  The visa holder must live and work in a specified regional area of Australia. Applicants can receive 10 bonus points for having a sponsor and applicants need to pass the points test.  This pathway can lead to permanent residency.

Graduate Temporary Visa

This visa allows international students to live and work in Australia temporarily after they have finished their studies in Australia. This visa can be granted for 18 months or up to 4 years, depending on their qualification.
